Storage Area Networks provide access to consolidated, block-level storage over a dedicated network that connects servers and storage arrays. SAN solutions are based on Fibre Channel (FC) or Gigabit Ethernet (iSCSI) technologies that offer both high-performance and virtually infinite connectivity. Fibre Channel SANs are typically used for large scale storage consolidation and business applications requiring optimised transaction performance and high data transfer rates. Gigabit Ethernet SANs are typically selected for small to mid-sized storage environments where low entry cost, not performance, is the key criteria. Regardless of connectivity, SAN solutions offer advanced features including, point-in-time copy, remote mirroring and redundant components for high availability.
