Content Addressed Storage (CAS)
According to a survey sponsored by EMC in the year 2000 75% of the information in the world is now known to be of "fixed content".
Fixed content simply refers to data which is stored but does not change. It could be an invoice, a purchase order, a published paper, a final version of a document, a financial statement, architectural drawing, archived e-mail, or even a medical X-ray. It is information that needs to be stored but should not be altered in any way until it is eventually deleted (or in some cases needs to be kept for ever).
When you add the regulations around electronic record-keeping, which most business sectors need to comply with these days, a storage solution designed specifically for keeping fixed content secure was certainly a need that had to be addressed.
EMC released the Centera "Content Addressed Storage" (CAS) product in 2002, the world's first solution specifically designed to meet the unique requirements of fixed content.
Centera provides online access with assured content authenticity and petabyte scalability for a wide range of fixed content and allows the implementation of long term data retention policies in a future proof infrastructure system.
The main benefits of the Centera CAS solution can be summarised as follows:
- Simple management of fixed content
- Automated retention policies implementation
- Complete solutions to meet regulatory requirements
- Scalability without reconfiguration
- Self-healing
- Business continuity protection
- Easy installation and non-disruptive upgrades
- Future proof architecture
