HT DATA REPOSITORY
HT Data Repository is an application archiving system used to reliably copy files or data objects to any combination of storage media for safe-keeping and efficient access, potentially for long periods of time. The product is often described as a “valet parking service for data.” Applications present data to HT Repository for safe-keeping and according to the application's pre-defined rules, it stores that data on a particular combination of media, in multiple copies at multiple locations, managing retention and long-term handling of the media in accordance with data lifecycle management policies. As it accepts data, HT Data Repository returns a “token” to the application, to be presented whenever the data is to be restored to the online environment. The product is storage agnostic, supporting disk, tape, and optical devices. It is often used to copy data to “compliant” write-once media. A variety of applications integrate to HT Data Repository including BridgeHead’s own HT FileStore system. These applications will often stub or delete online data files after they have been archived through HT Data Repository, transparently reducing primary storage utilization to users and applications that may later access the data.
HT Data Repository both adds to and gains value from the other components of the HT ISM suite. HT FileStore provides the rules-engine and underlying database system to identify and populate HT Data Repository with suitable data, transparently to the end-user. HT OpenMedia provides the rules-based allocation of secondary storage media and the ability to manage that media in compliance with archive requirements for extremely long periods of time. HT Data Repository and HT Backup naturally integrate to provide alternative methods for protecting data on secondary storage. Data archived through HT Data Repository no longer needs to be routinely backed up by HT Backup. By decreasing the data handled in nightly backups, the cost of backup and the recovery time is greatly reduced.
