REFURBISHED BAKBONE SHARED VIRTUAL DISK LIBRARY (SVDL)

Shared Virtual Disk Library (SVDL)

With all of the benefits of a regular VDL, a variety of disparate operating systems can share a single VDL's resources residing on a SAN-attached disk system with NetVault: Backup's SVDL technology. A NetVault: Backup server and several SmartClient's can simultaneously write backup streams and access restore data from a SVDL.

Improved Business Continuity

Disk-based backup provides rapid online data restores that help get a data center and mission-critical server and database applications back up and running faster in the event of a failure than traditional tape backup. Restores are faster because backup data can be easily recovered directly from either a virtual or real library, depending on media availability. Unlike competitive VDL solutions which direct restores through one node, since SVDL allows access to multiple nodes, if a node is down or not available, the SVDL offers alternate client restore with direct access from disk. Alternate Client Restore directly from disk without using the LAN is key to business continuity which ensures improved regulatory compliance for Sarbanes-Oxley, Europe's Data Protection Act and Japan’s HPB 517.

Increased Data Availability

NetVault: Backup gives administrators the best of both worlds by keeping offsite backups remote while retaining fresh backups on disk for ultra-fast restores. Users can optimize for enhanced speed or cost by selecting from multiple SAN environments (Fibre channel, gigabit ethernet or iSCSI). They can also select the backup approach that best suits their environment including Full, Incremental, Differential or Consolidated.

Lower Total Cost of Ownership

A shorter backup window minimizes the performance impact on mission critical applications, enhances overall operational efficiency, and increases the time available for production jobs. SVDL reduces hardware costs by minimizing the impact on tape drives of frequent stop/starts which wear down drives and stress the tape media with potential errors. Simultaneous backups from multiple data streams further enhance administrative productivity while reducing the learning curve involved since the SVDL operates just like a physical tape device. Typically a center must buy multiple disk units and then attach each disk unit to a distributed resource. SVDL uses a single centralized disk unit which improves disk utilization and results in major savings in free space requirement, management time and energy consumption.
